Milwaukee, WI – Sweet Black Coffee/Suite Lounge and Rebirth Ink Productions are proud to partner on a residency in which all three of Linetta Davis’ plays will feature this year at Suite Lounge; the first being the choreopoem, A Black Woman’s Burden: Her Journey from Pain to Freedom.
In this five-woman piece, Davis reveals the brokenness relived in adulthood after experiencing childhood trauma. Through the archetypes of a down-trodden broken woman, an angry activist, a passive church lady, and a lovelorn blues woman, the Author, also a character, seeks to heal each woman, each part of a woman through storytelling as a means to repair the harm in her life, her family and her community.
“The slam-style mid-to-late ‘90’s spoken word style of Ntozake Shange’s stage drama is mirrored in the work of Milwaukee playwright/poet Linetta Davis.
Davis Choreopoem A Black Woman’s Burden covers similar ground as Shange’s work in a style all its own. The effort to harness the power of individual voices into powerful narrative texts is a very primal one.”
